Irudini Umali Thilakarathna (born March 16, 1987) is a prominent Sri Lankan actress, dancer, vocalist, director, and educator. Born and raised in Colombo, Sri Lanka, she is of Sinhalese ethnicity and holds Sri Lankan nationality. Umali received her early education at President’s College, Rajagiriya, and Musaeus College, Colombo 07. She later studied in Japan, graduating with distinction from Nihon University College of Art in Film Studies, where she earned the prestigious President’s Award. She is JLPT N1 certified in Japanese and holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Early Childhood Education. In addition, she is a sworn counsellor and psychotherapist currently pursuing her Master’s degree. Umali began her acting career at the age of 14 with the film Rosa Wasanthe (2001). She became a household name through films like Asai Man Piyabanna, Maharaja Gemunu, A Level, Nino Live, and Sihina Nelum Mal. Her powerful portrayal in Bohimiyanuwa earned her the Best Actress award at the 2017 Sumathi and Raigam Tele Awards. She won again for her work in Sakarma (2021) and Pithru (2022). Notably, she starred in the Japanese film Final Judgement (2012), becoming the first Sri Lankan actress to lead a major Japanese production.
Umali was previously married to actor Saranga Disasekara; the marriage ended in 2018. Now based in Colombo, she continues to inspire through her diverse talents and contributions to arts and education.
